Communist prisons have allowed us to look at the kingdom of darkness as if under a microscope, to dissect diabolical attacks and identify specific tactics and goals. Through the guards and prison authorities we have seen Satan working his desire to kill love and faith and inspire worship of himself. To accomplish this he stirred up hate, ‘permanent cell conflicts’, kept prisoners sick, forced perversities and blasphemies, drove them to despair and terrorized them. That phrase of Father Calciu’s ‘especially the terror’ rings in our head…sitting all day waiting for the cell door to open to receive another beating or being forced to undress and beat the man I love and to….and to…and to…‘especially the terror’.
We need no longer be bewildered and dumbfounded by events in the daily news. Clearly we are seeing what Jesus predicted, ‘the spread of wickedness in the last days’…the ethnic cleansing and tribal genocide; the eruption of pornography and perversity in the media and internet; epidemics of mental and physical sickness and sexually transmitted diseases; despairing youth killing themselves at record rates; blasphemous satanic bands, the open worship of Satan…the terror. President Bush was correct when he said on September 11, 2001, that ‘Today, America has seen evil’.1 Terrorists who believe they are pleasing God by killing themselves and hundreds of innocent people, with increasingly no political motive, just terror for the sake of terror, is evil…it is Satan and his demons working their desires through them. And, yes, finding an explanation for all the above madness is, in a way, reassuring…to realize that all of the above are exactly the elements and results of what in those prisons was so patently diabolical…that, yes, this must be the wickedness Jesus warned would spread in the last days causing the love of most to grow cold.


"Every evening we made up ground gained by the communists."




Pastor Wurmbrand had been driven to near apostasy, but if he had died in that cell he’d have gone to heaven. His emotional and spiritual condition had been seriously damaged but his spiritual position, ‘in Christ’, remained secure. Even though he’d lost most of his faith, he hadn’t lost his salvation for it wasn’t his faith that saved him, the grace of God did. “For by grace you have been saved through faith…”2 Once God puts His Spirit into a believer, it is there permanently. Ali’s love had died, he’d been driven to depravity where he could not, not sin, but Ali was a Christian and he is with Christ. None, who have repented and received Jesus as their Savior, whose love grows cold as wickedness spreads in the last days, will lose their salvation, but they will lose their effectiveness as soldiers in God’s army, will lose their ability to wrestle with powers and principalities, will lose their witness…could easily, as many in Romania did, lose their children. Under communism, every contact with every aspect of the culture included the danger of contamination by false values, and it took constant vigilance, Sabina Wurmbrand tells us, for Christian parents to keep their children from being captured by the lies. “Professors blasphemed, denied the Bible, and in their struggle for the youth they seemed to have all the weapons. Every Christian mother had this struggle. Life was a battlefield. Every evening we made up ground gained by the communists during the day.”3

The attack in the West is, perhaps, even more insidious because so few recognize there is an attack. Most schools and universities, much of the entertainment industry and journalism, just about all of the institutions of the secular humanistic culture, see man as a cosmic accident and evolved matter and promote values of selfishness, greed and lust. Some promote revenge. Values that promote living for others are scorned. Some churches endorse abortion...some, with their ‘prosperity gospel’ promote greed and selfishness. These values…lust, greed, selfishness and revenge…are specifically Satanic values. You can find them listed in the Satanic Bible. Just participating in, or receiving from these institutions, can cause love to grow cold. And with love grown cold there is little motivation to re-instruct our children when they return from school and inadequate spiritual authority to do combat with the enemy of their souls. This book is for those, like me, who are grieved to see yet another Christian child return from college with damaged values, another young girl in the church pregnant out of wedlock, another church with no real witness in the community.

98 Out of 100!

A pro-life magazine in 1993 carried an article stating that in Romania ninety-eight out of one hundred pregnancies was ending in abortion. It had to be a misprint…but, no, the author assured me when I called him, it was true…the highest rate in the world. The previous summer, when my wife, Peggy, and I had visited Romania and spoken in schools in Bucuresti, we had been amazed at the purity and innocence of the students. Imagine that until 1990 they had not been exposed to perverse music or erotic movies. Also that summer we stayed with a Romanian family for two weeks way to the north on a farm nine miles from the Russian border. We found there in the people something so unique and precious and real…something that for years something in us had been searching for…something innocent and pure. Our hearts remained, though we returned temporarily to the States, and now they were being broken by that magazine article, by the thought of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…..98 out of every one hundred of the unborn Romanians being ripped apart before their first breath because a particularly demented form of communism had left the people with so little hope for the future…and it was either cry and can’t sleep in America or go there and try to do something about it.

All of the directors of Bucuresti’s ten maternity hospitals where, daily, a total of nearly fifteen hundred abortions were performed, gave us permission to put up posters, counsel women in waiting rooms, even show pro-life videos...not because they had moral convictions against abortion, but because they knew, with only two per cent of the babies conceived being born, Romania was literally killing itself. They were willing to collaborate with us to reduce the genocidal rate. Keeping our love from growing cold was our biggest challenge. How could it not, to speak, day after day, with women who had had ten, fifteen…one woman thirty abortions…to pass the orphanage on the way to the hospital and know that inside, strapped to a crib for seven years was Ioan, whose hands and feet were curling into claws from lack of use, and all you wish is to volunteer in order to hold Ioan and let him feel love, but are denied permission by the communist trained director who would rather have placid, immobile Ioans, rather than stimulated Ioans demanding her attention...so she couldn’t sit and sip her coffee.

And it tears you up that down the street from where you live is Ioan curling into a human pretzel and you can’t do anything about it…yes you pray, but you are an American used to getting things done and you can’t even enter that orphanage…better to cool down that love…and you learn that’s what thousands and millions have done to deal with hundreds of children living in the streets and down in the sewers…remembering that their beautiful country, with the richest soil in Europe, in the 1930s ‘the breadbasket of Europe’, raped by an insane dictator to become impoverished, where even a doctor, now still fifteen years after the revolution, can make just $100 dollars a month…and eyes you pass in the streets in the long winters are wide with fear as the currency inflates and even bread becomes a luxury…the most logical question is, ‘How can there be any love in anybody?’

‘No one cares about anyone anymore’ is how Vaclev Havel, who became the president of the Czech Republic after his release from a communist prison, put it in a speech in 1991 about the heritage of communism. To that he added, ‘No one believes anything anymore’ and ‘Everyone thinks one thing and says another’. Love, Faith and Truth were the victims, not just in the guinea pigs of the diabolical re-education programs, the ‘Alis’ who could no longer love anyone or receive anything from anybody, who compulsively betrayed their friends, but, in varying degrees, in the majority of Eastern Europeans. Few escaped the terror…entire countries became like prisons.


There is hardly a
Romanian family
in which there has
been none arrested.



‘Don’t take it just like that! If from every family will be taken one person that family will submit out of fear!’
And this is what happened! There is hardly a Romanian family in which there has been none arrested. In my family there were two, one escaped, a fugitive...in other families, four. Lenin said: ‘with a card for food and a whip I will control the masses!’ The card means rationed food, distributed through the party’s whim...and the whip means the secret police! ‘With famine and with the secret police I will control the masses!’”



Four hundred priests,
thousands of believers
were sent to prison.



Many of them were killed.For centuries, a large majority of Romanians had been Christians. After the Second World War, according to Father Boila, under Russian domination, Christians found themselves the enemy. “The main purpose of communism, especially of those who were behind it, was to destroy Christ’s church, for it was the greatest enemy of communism and this fight against Christianity, against Christ, was the main purpose of the communists, especially of the leaders. I lived this experience, the destruction of the Greek Catholic church, when all our bishops were imprisoned.

Four hundred priests, thousands of believers were sent to prison. Many of them were killed.” Materialism intended to kill the spirit.

Entire countries became ‘re-education programs’. In Romania atheistic-materialism was force fed through the educational system, the media, the arts...through all of the culture’s institutions. Ceausescu, on the country’s only television station, preached his propaganda live for two hours every day. “What Materialism intended to do”, Father Galeriu told us, “was to kill the spirit and overturn the order of values. Instead of God, it put Nature; Instead of Spirit, Matter; Instead of Freedom, Dictatorship; Instead of the Absolute Model, Who is God-Man, the Dictator; Instead of Love, Hate; Instead of Faith, Evolution; Instead of the Gospel, this Scientific-Atheistic-Materialistic vision.”

Father Galeriu witnessed the tragedy first hand. He saw what happens to a generation when all of the literature, history and biology they receive in school, when every message they receive from all of the mass media, is filtered through that ‘scientific-atheistic-materialistic vision’. It ‘kills the spirit’. But the tragedy, Wurmbrand believes, is deeper than is conveyed by those three words. In his book, ‘Marx and Satanism’, he searches the writings and poems and letters of Karl Marx and finds almost nothing of the idealist burning to lead the proletariat to a worker’s paradise and instead discovers a worshipper of Satan whose declared aim is “to draw all mankind into the abyss (of Hell) and follow them laughing.”4 Geoffrey Bull, from first hand experience, knows that is true. “It is not just a question of agreement with their tenets of doctrine, but there is an insistence on a bowing down before their assumed authority if salvation is to be known. I speak from experience over three long heart-breaking years. Communist authorities boast of a materialistic approach to problems but when they fight, they fight for your mind. To put it in words they would wholly disqualify, they want your soul. The whole conspiracy behind communism is the deposing of God and placing man under Satanic control.”5


Sin brings with it a demonic presence.

Father Sofian explains how this Satanic conspiracy operates. “Communism tried through all means to remove God from the conscience of the Romanian world, from old people and youth. Then sin, one after another, infiltrated itself. Sin became deeply enrooted in our life. Sin brings with it a demonic presence which needs to be removed, exorcized. And it is not only some people, but our entire society became demonized.” At least now we comprehend the root source of the mind boggling cruelty that would leave orphans strapped in their cribs for years; the staggering horror of ninety-eight out of one hundred children dying in the womb...it is Satanic, the result of Satan’s conspiracy of removing God and His moral absolutes thus opening the door to sin…each sin ushering in increased demonic presence till the society itself becomes demonized.

The Satanic Conspiracy in the West

God was removed from Romania forcibly almost overnight. In the West for humanism, ‘man replacing God with himself’, to gradually replace Christianity as the dominant belief system, has taken almost two hundred years, but the results are the same…consciences seared, sin multiplied, increased demonization. In the late 1990’s one out of four teens in America said they had seriously considered suicide…six every day did. 3,600 daily were assaulted on school property, 80 were raped, 135,000 weapons, guns or knives, every day were brought onto school property.6 Time Magazine’s March 19, 2001 issue documented twenty high school massacres or attempted massacres over a twenty month period. Their conclusion, after examining all of the contributing factors…the availability of guns, the breakdown of the family, the violence on television…their conclusion was “these are normal kids caught in a toxic culture”7. That’s a brave acknowledgement from such a defender of American culture, but the question they left unanswered was, ‘Why?’…‘How did this happen?’ ‘How did the culture become so toxic, so poisonous?’ Exactly the way it happened in Romania: the removal of God, Jesus, faith, the Gospel…and the imposition of false

values and ideas. And ‘toxic’ is not an accurate adjective. ‘Satanic’ is.

In the early 1990s Mindy Smalling, the daughter of missionaries Grady and Janet Smalling, was absent from her high school in rural Oklahoma for two years when she lived with her parents on the mission field. “I remember the first day that I returned I was completely shocked. I saw things that I thought I would never see in a public high school. I heard things in the hallways that can not be repeated and I saw things that completely blew my mind. Everything in the high school that I saw was just filth. And in the bus going home from the school I heard things about what students did, when and with whom, what they tried for the first time and how it felt. There seemed to be no difference between what the Christians were doing and what the non-Christians were doing. It was just a thing to do. And an example of this would be that out my (Christian) youth group of about twenty, seven girls got pregnant within two years.



"Everything in the high school that I saw was just filth."






It was a war zone.It was a war zone…a zone where drugs and alcohol just thrived! So many people had changed since the last time I had been home, changed for the worse…many kids were dressed totally in black, black hair and black eye make-up, earrings from every part of their body. When I had met Andy he was a very clean boy who was very optimistic and loved life and loved Jesus. When I saw him my heart broke. We’d been so close and we loved each other and now we had nothing in common. He said: ‘Well, I started smoking marijuana, it was just innocent fun, but now I’m stuck, I have no choice.”

Peer pressure may have gotten Andy started with the ‘innocent fun’, but to feel stuck and have no choice is the experience of being demonized… each sin leading to increased demonization. And it wasn’t just peer pressure that led to most of the Christian girls getting pregnant. Sins of promiscuity and blasphemy and hate in that school certainly attracted legions of demons, and the greater the demon presence the harder it becomes to resist temptation. Not sinning in that spiritual environment, as Mindy did, resisting the temptations that damaged so many, one of the few to graduate still a virgin, requires spiritual strength not unlike that of the prisoners whose lives we are studying. To learn how to become that strong is the purpose of this book.

The New Attack on Eastern Europe

Father Calciu, who has lived in Washington, D.C. since 1988, and sees everyday the damage the culture does to youth there, who, from the first hand experience of the Pitesti re-education program, understands the diabolical as few in the world do, knows that the attack youth are under is not just, as Time calls it, ‘toxic’. His warning to Eastern European youth could not be any more urgent. “The attack of the Western world against the youth from those countries that have just recently been freed from communism is an attack as diabolical as communism’s.

They are on the brink of despair and they need to get out from under this attack.” In 1993, when our ministry first started speaking to Romanian students, endeavoring to supply them with weapons to resist the new attack from the West, I was amazed by their innocence and purity. But last year, while speaking to a class I had to choke back my tears to see that purity so quickly being replaced by arrogance and disrespect. Teachers tell us they are seeing moral collapse. This is Satan’s great desire…demonized youth becoming his exclusive property. Anyone who dares do combat with him for their souls, snatching from him some of his trophies, will themselves, as Father Giurgiu and Father Sofian learned, when they were imprisoned for ministering to young people, become a target of his attack.
The desperate need Father Sofian had seen in the students in Bucuresti to be part of his meetings at the monastery, the one hundred and fifty children who daily flocked to hear Father Giurgiu, these were sparks which later joined other similar sparks and ignited into Romania’s revolution. Father Calciu believes: “Our revolution was really an extraordinary victory of the Romanian youth who felt that what was happening to them was not right, that they had to get out from under that ocean of official lies of the communist regime and of their parents.” And at Christmas time in 1989 in Timisoara, thousands, mostly young people, surrounded the house of a priest, who the Securitate were trying to arrest, shouting, ‘The God, who you said was dead, He is Alive!’ The next day it spread to Bucuresti and when the dictator tried to speak lies to the crowd he was shouted down...most of the army joined the students....Ceausescu and his wife attempted to flee, were captured, tried and executed…the reign of terror had come to an end.

Fifteen years later, though the abortion rate is still astronomical, it has dropped...to seventy-three out of one hundred pregnancies ending in abortion. Ioan, the boy in the orphanage, is being loved. Volunteers now regularly work in that and many other orphanages. Many children are being placed in foster care. Many Christians are receiving God’s burden and joining the battle…for teens, for street children, for old people. The love of many, grown cold under communism, is coming alive…yet now there is the new attack.

In the West the ideas we discuss openly in Romanian schools, such as the ideas presented in this book, are declared illegal, yet many young people there, too, are becoming aware of the attack they have been under...that ‘what has been happening to them is not right’…are beginning to ‘shout down the lies’. Values that have led to damaged character are being exposed as false. In America in many school districts abstinence based sexual education programs are replacing ‘safe sex, condom distribution programs’. Many are realizing that ‘the God who they were told is dead, He is alive!’ Legally, now, after school Bible clubs are meeting in public high schools. Apparently many in these last days are determined, as love grows cold, not be counted as one of the ‘most’
